Startup Visa:
Letter of Support
What is a Letter of Support?
The Letter of Support is a critical document for applying to Canada's
Startup Visa Program. It is issued by a
designated organization, such as a
business incubator, venture fund, or angel investor group, and serves as official endorsement for your startup business. Without this letter, applicants cannot proceed with their Startup Visa application.
A Letter of Support is a formal document from a designated organization that confirms their endorsement of your business idea. This letter indicates that the organization is willing to provide support — financial or otherwise — to help your startup succeed in the Canadian market. It is mandatory for anyone seeking to immigrate through the Startup Visa Program and obtain
Permanent Resident status in Canada.
Changes Effective May 2024
As of May 1, 2024, all new Letters of Support are issued with unique identification numbers. Any Letters of Support provided before this date must be submitted with the applicant’s visa application by November 1, 2024, or they will no longer be valid.
Additionally, Letters of Support now include detailed information about the founders' shares, stakeholders, and how dependent the members are on each other for the success of the startup. If one participant is denied, the rest of the team could also face denial if the startup's success is deemed dependent on all members.
The letter also includes a summary from the designated organization about the startup's mission and objectives, ensuring that both IRCC and the organization align on expectations.
How to Obtain a Letter of Support?
To secure a Letter of Support, you must:
- Present your business idea: Reach out to a designated organization and submit your business plan for evaluation.
- Secure their endorsement: Once the organization has reviewed and approved your idea, they will issue a Letter of Support.
However, simply acquiring the Letter of Support isn't enough. The designated organization will also submit their own documentation directly to IRCC. This includes your business plan, financial documents, and other supporting materials. This ensures transparency and confirms the organization's full backing of your startup.
